The County Council Have Many Reasons for their wanting to Build this 'relief' road, which are listed below along with our own comments
- 1. "To divert traffic from the A690"
- So why do they say 78% of traffic will remain on the A690?
- 2. "To ease congestion at Milburngate"
- So why do both route options rejoin the A690 within 500 metres of Milburngate roundabout?
- 3. "To help our economy"
- With a budget of £10-25 million are there not other services we should spend our money on?
- 4. " A new road is the only option"
- More roads create more congestion. What of other creative alternatives?
- 5. " To help improve our environment"
- How is this possible when countryside so close to our city centre is destroyed?
- 6. " They want to "improve where we live"
- How will destroying the valley in the middle of Durham improve our lives?
NEWS: In July 2005 the county council's local transport plan included 2 options
for the NRR. Since then we have actively campaigned against these two
routes.
In September, eight weeks, later they suddenly proposed a third option-an outer
option. Why have they changed their plans?
If they really favour this new option as a more acceptable route why have
they not dropped the other two options?
How many other options have they up their sleeve? 4, 5,6 or even more?
What is the real position of the council? Which part of our valley are they keenest to destroy?
Our campaign will continue to be to save the valley. This so-called "outer"
option has already been rejected once by local government for environmental
reasons, nor is it recommended by Capita, the County Council's own
consultants.
So why has it reappeared?
Our position remains clear alternatives to road building need to be explored
fully and demand management measures implemented to alleviate perceived
transport problems.
Don't let them build
